10-5-1986 Undercover of The Night

Today in history, October 5, 1986, Sandinista rebels from the country of Nicaragua shot down a plane and captured the pilot, Eugene Hasenfus, who confessed to his captors that the he and the CIA were transporting military supplies for use by the Contras.
This news hit Washington and Congress like a ton of bricks, because the U.S. backed Contras were an anti-Sandinista force that had operated outside the Constitution and the Boland Amendment that had been passed by Congress two years earlier in 1984.
The Boland Amendment had strictly forbidden the CIA or any other agency from supporting the Contras.
And although President Ronald Reagan believed that the Sandinista government of Nicaragua was a puppet of the Soviet Union, he had secured funding for the Contra rebels in 1981, but he had signed off on the Boland Amendment.
So If the story of pilot Eugene Hasenfus is true, then President Ronald Reagan had broken the law.
And as some of you may already know, this incident was pivotal into an investigation of the Executive Branch, and the Reagan Administration, that resulted in the Iran-Contra affair which began one month later.
The Iran-Contra affair was a political scandal that was revealed in November 1986 as a result of earlier events during the Reagan administration. It began as an operation to increase U.S.-Iranian relations, wherein Israel would ship weapons to a moderate, politically influential group of Iranians opposed to the Ayatollah Khomeini; the U.S. would reimburse Israel for those weapons and receive payment from Israel. Now Sir Mick Jagger and the Stones produced a politically charged song in 1983 called “Undercover Of The Night”, and Mick’s smoking hot ex-wife Bianca Jagger was from Nicaragua.
The lyrics see Jagger explore the then-ongoing political corruption in Central and South America;
“ All the young men, they’ve been rounded up; And sent to camps back in the jungle; And people whisper, people double-talk; Once proud fathers act so humble.” (wikipedia)
A full blown Congressional hearing began in December 1986 in which members of the Reagan Administration were called to testify, and these included Marine Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North who was in charge of arms sales and funneling money to the Contras.
Many investigations ensued, including those by the United States Congress and the three-man, Reagan-appointed Tower Commission. Neither could find any evidence that Reagan himself knew of the extent of the multiple programs.[1] In the end, fourteen administration officials were charged with crimes, and eleven convicted, including then-Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger.[9] They were all pardoned in the final days of the George H. W. Bush presidency, who had been vice-president at the time.[10] (wikipedia)
Eugene Hasenfus, the pilot who was shot down and captured on this day in history, October 5, 1986, which set in motion the Iran-Contra scandal, was tried and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment by a Nicaraguan court.
He was released by his Captors only weeks later.
So it was a really covert and creepy time back then in the 1980’s, with political and business machinations and operations taking place in “Undercover of The Night”.
The Stones Speaketh
Hear the screams of Center 42
Loud enough to bust your brains out
The opposition’s tongue is cut in two
Keep off the street ’cause you’re in danger
One hundred thousand disparus
Lost in the jails in South America
Cuddle up baby
Cuddle up tight
Cuddle up baby
Keep it all out of sight
Undercover
Keep it all out of sight
Undercover of the night
The sex police are out there on the streets
Make sure the pass laws are not broken
The race militia has got itchy fingers
All the way from New York back to Africa
Cuddle up baby
Keep it all out of sight
Cuddle up baby
Sleep with all out of sight
Cuddle up baby
Keep it all out of sight
Undercover
Undercover
Undercover
Keep it all out of sight
Undercover of the night
All the young men they’ve been rounded up
And sent to camps back in the jungle
And people whisper people double-talk
And once proud fathers act so humble
All the young girls they have got the blues
They’re heading on back to Center 42
Keep it undercover
Keep it all out of sight
Keep it undercover
Keep it all out of sight
Undercover
Keep it all out of sight
Undercover
Keep it all out of sight
Undercover of the night
Down in the bars the girls are painted blue
Done up in lace, done up in rubber
The John’s are jerky little G.I. Joe’s
On R&R from Cuba and Russia
The smell of sex, the smell of suicide
All these things I can’t keep inside
Undercover
Keep it all out of sight
Undercover of the night
Undercover of the night
Undercover of the night
Undercover
Undercover
Undercover of the night
