I went to see the Deftones tonight. I dressed for the show in black jeans and a black long sleved shirt, which, considering who I was going to see, I felt was appropriate. The doors opened at 7, so I left a bit early to make sure I wouldn't get caught in traffic. Plus I wasnt sure if it was doors at 7 or show based on the tickets. I made it to Niagara in no time, and even stopped for a bite on the way. No line at the will call, so I picked up my tickets, and then got in line to enter. There was no word on an opening act, but when I got my ticket it said "And a Very Special Guest" so I thought, oh, very special guest, I have all their albums. Turns out the opening act was "This Will Destroy You." Yeah, never heard of them either.
So even though doors were supposed to open at 7:00, I dont think I made it in until 7:30. I got a beer and a bottle of water, only $6, which most concerts the beers alone are $8, so I figured that wasnt too bad. The place itself was small. No bigger than my High school auditorium. Which meant I was very close to the stage, I staked out a good spot high and to the left and camped out.
About 8:30 or so the opening act went on. They weren't bad, the music sounded good, but no lyrics it was all instrumental. Not that I mind a good instrumental, I do enjoy some lyrics. They played a couple songs, then broked down the set. The Deftones didnt make it on till close to 9:30, and they lead off with "Diamond Eyes." They sounded great, I took many pictures, but given the light and the fact the lead singer moves a lot and fast, not too many of them came out worth posting. The ones that did, I have up here. I almost feel like I had a second workout today, because I was jumping up and down, and banging my head while singing every song. If I could follow the Deftones on tour, I think I'd be at my target weight in no time. The show was outstanding, they managed to play most of the new album and cover lots of their old songs. They played my favorite of all time, and even though Maynard wasnt there to do leads, it still sounded awesome. They played an hour and a half set, and by the end I was hoarse from singing and screaming. I was severly tempted to jump into the pit, but I had to remind myself I am an old man, and my days of moshing it up are long past me.
The show was over a little after 11, and I left with a ringing in my ears and a warm spot in my heart.
