The Canadian boxing team is leaving London without a boxing medal. Dartmouth, N.S.s Custio Clayton was defeated in the mens 69-kilogram quarter-finals Tuesday, losing to Freddie Evans of Great Britain on Day 11 at London 2012. Clayton, 24, lost a heartbreaker by way of a count-back against the crowd favourite, becoming the third Canadian this week to fall just short of a guaranteed medal. An appeal filed by Boxing Canada was later denied. After getting behind 7-2 after the first round to the No. 2-ranked welterweight, Clayton stormed back in the second and seemed to dominate a third round to pull out a victory. However, the judges scored it close enough to keep the match tied at 14-14 and the decision then went to Evans. Fellow Canadians Simon Kean of Trois-Rivieres, Que., and Mary Spencer of Wiarton, Ont., had already been knocked off in the quarter-finals of their respective boxing competitions on Day 10. The 21-year-old Evans came out very aggressively from the opening bell, and landed some big shots early, but Clayton did not back down. Evans used his right hand to hold Clayton at bay and fire one-two combinations, while Clayton had trouble finding an opening. The reigning European champion landed a nice jab at the two-minute mark and a late body shot en route to a commanding lead after one. "The first round it was point for point, I knew he had a great reach," Clayton said. "He had the crowd behind him, so the crowd got in the way." Clayton adjusted well in the second round, moving more to the outside on the southpaw, and landed a big right. However, a strong right hook caused Clayton to stumble as Evans re-adjusted and countered with scoring shots. The determined Canadian landed a couple of late right hands and won a nice round 6-3, but still trailed by two points after two rounds. Evans was also cautioned a couple of times for pushing Claytons head down with his forearm. The third had the makings of a slugfest early, but Clayton appeared to get the better of the exchanges, landing a nice uppercut. Evans, who seemed to be tiring as he was stalked by the still energetic Clayton, started to backpedal and hold him tight whenever they got close. He was also cautioned again, this time for hitting with the inside of his hand. Clayton continued to be the aggressor late as Evans lost his tempo and threw very few punches in the last minute. The Brit was also cautioned once more -- seemingly a third time for pushing Claytons head down, which would have resulted in an automatic points deduction -- but no penalty was given. The round ended as a clear-cut one for Clayton, but the 6-4 edge was not enough for the victory. "I thought the judges would give the fight to me, but thats how it goes," Clayton said. After the bout, Boxing Canada filed an appeal with AIBA, claiming Evans should have been given a penalty for the third caution and Clayton be awarded two points. Rule 12.2.1 states a fighter should be given a warning penalty when he is cautioned three times for the same foul. However, the appeal was denied. One decision has already been overturned at London 2012 as a result of a referee failing to warn a fighter. American Errol Spence lost a decision 13-11 to Indias Krishan Vikas, but it was overturned after it was determined Vikas should have gotten two warnings. Spence was awarded a 15-13 win and he was reinserted into the tournament. He went on to lose his quarter-final bout Tuesday to Andrey Zamkovoy of Russia 16-11, leaving no American men left in the boxing event and meaning a U.S. mens boxing team will leave an Olympic Games without a medal for the first time. Claytons fight Tuesday followed another one that also ended with a questionable count-back victory for the favoured fighter. Top-ranked welterweight Taras Shelestyuk of Ukraine defeated Frances Alexis Vastine after their bout was tied 18-18. It appeared Vastine had dominated the third round but the judges scored it 6-6 for the draw. Shelestyuk shrugged sheepishly at his opponent after the decision was announced, seemingly aware that he got away with one. Shelestyuk will now face Evans in the semi-finals on Friday. Vastine did not take the decision so easily. He fell to the mat and lay there in disbelief even after everyone had exited, eventually moving on in tears. In the other welterweight semi-final, Zamkovoy will take on No. 2 seed Serik Sapiyev, who clobbered Venezuelas Gabriel Maestre Perez 20-9 with a decisive 9-2 third round. In the other boxing division in action on Tuesday, flyweight No. 2 seed Andrew Selby was upset by Cuban Robeisy Ramirez Carrazana 16-11, silencing the home crowd. He will face Michael Conlan, who rode a third-round flurry to break out of a 12-12 tie to beat Frances Nordine Oubaali 22-18 and become the second Irishman to clinch a boxing medal at London 2012. The No. 1 seed Misha Aloian of Russia cruised past Puerto Ricos Jeyvier Cintron Ocasio in a 23-13 decision. He will meet Mongolias Tugstsogt Nyambayar, who pulled off a minor 15-10 upset over 5th seed Jasurbek Latipov of Uzbekistan. Wholesale Jerseys Supply .S. Kean faced constant calls for his resignation from fans last season when the club was relegated from the Premier League, but had retained the public backing of the clubs owners, Indian poultry firm Venkys. Blackburn is third in the League Championnship after a good start, but Kean issued a statement Friday saying that "it is with deep regret, given my hard work and service for the club for a number of years, that I have been forced to resign as manager of Blackburn Rovers Football Club with immediate effect, due to my position as team manager becoming untenable.dddddddddddd" The club did not immediately announce a replacement.
