ALBANY,  GA (WALB) –Tomorrow is the 9th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks on our nation. It's a day that changed our country forever.

Even though it's been nearly a decade, it's still fresh in the minds of so many of us. That horrific day in history still resonates with people here in Albany.

Dr. Nancy Anson volunteered with the Red Cross to counsel victims after the attack. Rose Palazzolo lost her cousin when the Twin Towers were hit.

Watching the towers fall was like a scene from a movie. "It looked like hell on earth and it was hell. Hell on earth," said Dr. Nancy Anson. She learned about the attacks from her son, who lives in New York. "He said 'Mom I'm okay'. And I said 'I'm glad to hear that.' He said mom the towers were hit, but I'm okay," she said.

One week later Anson was in new York listening to stories and council those in grief.  "Survivor guilt, If I hadn't stopped at the stop light. My sister was in the building. My sons were there," said Anson.

The destruction made New York city look like a war zone. " And to have it happen on American soil, I don't think people really think about it," said Anson.

Rose Palazzolo thinks about her cousin in one of the buildings that fell. "There was hope and then you saw both buildings go down. Then you say 'There's no way he could survive'," she said.

Sadly, his body was never recovered. "They did have a nice huge service in New Jersey. It was sad, because other people where he lived died also," said Palazzolo.

Two worlds apart, both ladies share a common experience of finding comfort in a higher power. "The only way to be able to deal with it and swallow it was through prayer," said Palazzolo.

"I had to believe something, and I had to say there was some reason for this, but I don't know what," said Anson.

September 11th is a day in history America will never forget. Some people call it a conspiracy, prophecy, and even an act of war. Whatever you call it, it's a day that united Americans as one.

Three of hijacked planes hit their target, But passengers on flight United 93 over powered the attackers and the plane later crashed near Sharksville, Pennsylvania.
