Ok. I should be asleep. I said I was going to bed. And I did. But something was bothering me. As a cigar lover, I take my puros very seriously. And it struck me that many of the brands we have here in the US are actually brand names stolen from Cuba. Now, this may not mean much to those of you who dont smoke cigars, but to those of us that do, it raises a serious problem. If I buy a cigar in the US from these brands, and I buy another one in England, I have two very different cigars. One is most likely Dominican made and one is a Habano. The blend, the bouquet, the draw, the finish... all of these will differ drasticly between the two cigars. Since 1962 it has been illegal to import Habanos to the US. The following popular brands exist separately in both Cuba and the US:
H Upmann
Montecristo
Hoyo de Monterrey
Cohiba
Partagás
Romeo y Julieta
Punch
Trinidad
Saint Luis Rey
La Gloria Cubana
