Jangl Overview
What is Jangl?
Jangl gives you the ability to call anyone you know online, using the phone you already have. Simply tell us who you want to call and we'll give you a Jangl number to call them.

Jangl works from any phone, with no download, data plan, or computer required. If you can dial a phone number, you can Call Anyone with Jangl - even someone who has never used Jangl!

Jangl protects your privacy. To Call Anyone with Jangl, all you need to know is their email address - you never need their real phone number, and they'll never see yours.

Jangl knows no borders - you can call anyone, anywhere in the world. And you can talk live in 32 countries, with more to come.

How Does Jangl Work?
Simply tell us the email address of the person you want to call, and we’ll give you a Jangl number to call them.

When you call someone’s Jangl number, one of two things will happen:

You can leave them a voicemail, which we send to them by email.

If they have allowed it, your call will be forward to their phone and you can talk live.

How do you know everyone's phone numbers?
We don’t! Remember, to get a number you tell us who you want to call. If that person is not using Jangl, we let you leave a voice message and we’ll simply send your message to the email address you gave us. That’s how you can Call Anyone!

Why would I use Jangl?
Jangl is perfect for talking to people you know online, whether friends in your network, IM buddies, an auction or classified buyer or seller – anyone! You don’t have to be at your computer, so you can call from anywhere. And it doesn’t matter where they are – with Jangl you can call anywhere by dialing a local number.

But its good for much more, including:
Dating – by the time you’re ready to talk, you’ve probably exchanged emails. So get a Jangl number and call them the smart way. If you don’t hit it off, you can turn of the number completely, at any time.
International calling - since you each can get a local number to call the other person from your phone, from anywhere – no PC, headset, or download required.
Voice email – every Jangl number lets you leave a voicemail that is delivered by email. Use this when you don’t need to talk, when you are somewhere email is not available or convenient, or even to leave yourself a message!
So many more ways. Jangl yourself! Get a Jangl number for an email list! You tell us!

How is Jangl different from other anonymous phone service providers?

Privacy and Anonymity:
Jangl assigns a unique local phone number to each person in a Jangl connection. You would treat a Jangl number like you would any other number: you can screen calls with Caller ID, add the number to your mobile phone contacts, and use all of the features of your mobile phone, like assigning personal ring tones, returning calls from the received calls list, and more. Furthermore, because a Jangl number is unique to a relationship, your Jangl numbers cannot be used by anyone except the people you have established connections with. This helps prevent unsolicited calls to your phone.

Call Anyone:
Jangl lets you contact anyone, anywhere, right now. To contact someone, you simply enter an email address into the web form on the homepage, and Jangl will provide you with a number to call and leave a message for that person. Jangl then takes that message and delivers it to the intended recipient with a phone number (not your real number) to call you back. With Jangl, all you need is an email address to make contact and start talking now.

International Calling:
Jangl supports phone calls to 32 countries and counting, including Canada, the UK, most of the EU and Latin America. With Jangl, you and your connection are provided with local numbers, making Jangl calls from your phone very inexpensive. And, with Jangl, calling International land-line numbers from your mobile doesn’t require authorization and approval from your mobile carrier.

How much does Jangl cost?
During the Jangl beta period, the service is free. As we listen to your feedback and release new versions of the service, we may eventually reach a point where we decide to release all or parts of our service for a nominal fee.

Call Me
Can anyone call me using Jangl?
Anyone who knows your email address can call and leave you a voice message that Jangl sends to your email – just as they could send you an email at any time.
At first, though, they can only leave you voicemail. It’s up to you whether they can keep calling you and whether their calls will ever ring your phone. You can delete or block them, or add them as a Contact and call them back. With Jangl you have an unprecedented level of control over your phone communications.
In fact, because we’ve given you so much control, we think you’ll want to make it easy for anyone to call you! And that’s exactly what the CallMe Link is for.

What is a "CallMe Link"?
CallMe Links provide a simple way for you to let people call you without posting your phone number. Just replace youremail with your email address in the address below:
http://callme.jangl.com/youremail
and link to it anywhere you can – in your profile, blog, blog comment, email, email signature, auction listing…Anywhere. You don’t even have to sign up for Jangl to use CallMe Links! Anyone can click it and use Jangl to get a number to call you – safely, privately, and keeping you in control.

Jangl ID
What happened to Jangl IDs?
Jangl ID’s were a feature of previous Jangl beta services, but have been removed from the new Jangl service. Our goal is to make Jangl as easy to use, and start using, as possible. Instead of requiring people to sign up and create yet another ID before using Jangl, our new services like Call Anyone and CallMe links utilize existing, addresses and can be used by people who aren’t Jangl users!

Jangl Number
What is a Jangl number?
A Jangl number is a “virtual number” that’s not their real number, but works the same way for placing and receiving calls. To call someone, dial their Jangl number. When they call, you’ll see their Jangl number in caller ID. You can even add it to your phone Contacts.

But Jangl numbers do more. They give you online access to your voicemail. You can block the number at any time, and they can never call you again – not from a different phone, not ever. Jangl numbers are always local – even if the other person is half way around the world. You can call and choose to leave a voicemail before their phone even rings. And we are working hard to make them do even more.

Can I identify who is calling before I answer the phone?
Yes. In your Account Settings - Call Settings, you can choose to "screen" calls. The first time someone calls you, they will be asked to record a greeting to introduce themselves. When your phone rings, you will hear the greeting first. Then you can decide whether or not to take the call. This call screening process works much like the screening process of a collect call. On subsequent calls, you can identify the Caller based on Caller ID. Because you get a unique local phone number for each of your Jangl contacts, when someone calls you, you see a Jangl number in your Caller ID.

Can I end a Jangl relationship?
Of course, and you have two options available. “Blocking” a Jangl contact means your shared number with that person is disabled. When calling your shared Jangl number, a blocked contact will only hear that the number is not currently in service. The blocked Jangl contact is also removed from your contacts.
"Deleting" deletes the contact and the Jangl number so that person won't be able to use that number. However, that person can re-establish a Jangl connection with you again.

Voicemail
What happens if I cannot answer the phone? Can the Caller leave me a message?
Jangl provides you with voicemail. Really, really accessible voicemail. You can access your vmail through a URL or a phone number, receive email or sms notifications of voicemails, listen to your vmails at Jangl’s website as well as all the other standard dialing options. And, we’re going to do more tricks with Jangl voicemail in the near future. Keep your ears open.

Widget

What is the Jangl widget?
A Jangl widget allows visitors to quickly and easily get a Jangl number for you, either right there on your webpage or via a simple, quick re-direct to the Jangl site. The Jangl widget comes in two basic version – a Phone (Flash) version and a Button (HTML) version, each of which has distinct advantages. We’re building cooler widgets in the near future – widgets that let people call you more quickly and send text See our dedicated widget page for more info.

How do I get my own widget?
Don’t worry, it’s quick and easy to install a widget. See our dedicated widget page page to choose your own widget and install it almost anywhere.

Using Jangl
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Service Requirements
Do I need to purchase or install special equipment or software to use Jangl?
No.

Can I use Jangl with my business phone or my VoIP phone?
You can use Jangl with these types of phones as long as the outbound Caller ID matches the number of your phone. Unfortunately, this means that if your company uses a single corporate number with multiple extensions (geeks call this a “PBX”), you will not be able to use your business phone with Jangl. VoIP phones displaying a different outbound Caller ID will also not work.

What do I need to get started?
All you need is a telephone with a US-based number, outbound Caller ID enabled, and, of course, someone you want to speak with. Self-Janglers are welcome too – no judgements.

Do I need Caller ID enabled at all times to use Jangl?
No. Your outbound Caller ID does not have to be enabled at all times. Outbound Caller ID is necessary when you first call to create a message and any time you dial a Jangl phone number. You do not need to have Caller ID enabled to receive calls from other people. Having inbound Caller ID (the ability for you to see the phone numbers of people who call you) does not matter at any time.
Signing Up
What do I do if someone gives me a Jangl?
Martha Stewart says that the polite thing to do is return the Jangl. In all seriousness, the information you need to return a Jangl call will be in plain view in the email you receive from Jangl. You can choose to listen to the Jangl message, register and return the call, or simply ignore the message.

Why does Jangl need my personal phone number?
During the registration we ask for your phone number so that we can verify your identity for delivery of Jangl calls. We don’t do this when using Call Anyone because we use call identification to recognize where to route replies. At no point do we disclose your phone number to anyone. To see more information on privacy, please read our privacy policy.

Jangl’s take on privacy
Does anyone ever see my personal phone number?
Absolutely not. When you call someone using a Jangl phone number, only the Jangl phone number is displayed in the other person’s Caller ID. Your personal phone number will never be revealed.

Furthermore, at Jangl, we are tirelessly committed to protecting the privacy of our users, and have taken great steps to ensure that your information is protected and to eliminate any chance of fraud. We have put in place appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect and we will continue to enhance our security procedures as new technology becomes available.

Please read our privacy policy for more information.

How does my call show up on a phone bill when I make or receive calls to/from a Jangl phone number?
Your real phone number and the real phone numbers of the people you connect with using Jangl are never revealed on a phone bill. If you use a Jangl number to call other people, your itemized phone bill would show the Jangl number that you dialed. Likewise, if someone uses a Jangl number to call you, your phone bill would show that you received a call from that Jangl number.

What is Jangl’s privacy policy?
We take great care in protecting our users' private information. Please read our privacy policy for more information.

Troubleshooting
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Registration
I am having problems signing up (I cannot create a PIN, or I can create a PIN but Jangl.com does not recognize me).
Please make sure that your outbound Caller ID is enabled, and that the outbound number matches your actual number (you can do a quick check by calling another phone and checking the Caller ID that shows up).
If you have verified these things and you are still having problems, send an email to support@jangl.com describing the issue and noting that you’ve already taken these steps.
