Today i helped a man named david and his dog, his picture came across my pit bull page last night and he was holding a sign, unlike most people you see everyday standing at the off ramps or near busy intersections, his sign said "please need dog food". this touched my heart and i felt compelled to help him, as did some others who are in my area(dallas). I woke up this morning and i packed a small luggage bag i wasnt using with a few shirts and a blanket for the dog, towel, toiletries, lighter, some canned food. i went to PETCO to see if they would help me with some food for his dog waldo. i explained who i was and what my org. does and the employees came together and got a bag of dog food for me to give to him. i also got him a portable dog dish for waldo. some might say that people like david should work or that they are lazy, well let me tell you, david is a war veteran and he fought for this country in korea! he saved his dog waldo from a kill shelter and is a great guy, waldo is very cool as well. they were so happy when they saw me walking towards them with the bag that i had packed. he couldnt thank me enough for helping waldo. it almost made me tear up. i have never done anything quite like what i did today. it is a very humbling feeling to do something for those who are less fortunate. i did not know that david was a war veteran until today when i was there with him and waldo.and i am not sure it would have made a difference in whether i helped them or not. that was not the3 deciding factor that led me to make my decision to help. but i am so glad that i did help them and some more people and i are going back tomorrow to help them with more things, a leash for waldo, some clean clothes for david, some tarps to keep them dry,(they live under a bridge) and some morte food for both of them! i am very surprised to see so many people willing to help david and waldo. david could go to the shelter and not have to worry about living under a bridge, but they wont let waldo stay there. so he refused the help because of his pal waldo. he said to me today before i left" would you give up your best friend so you could have what they wouldnt" i said no ! he loves his dog and his dog loves him that is obvious. and we will do what we can to help them. i have been in contact with the veterans support people in dallas and they are going to help david get a job and his own place for him and waldo. i gue4ss what i am trying to say is that helping those who really need it and deserve it, as david and waldo do, makes you feel good inside, it gives you a feeling of accomplishment that i have never felt before, the unconditional love that david has for his dog means something ! how can we as humans not appreciate that ! how can we turn a blind eye to a man who was willing to lay down his life for all of us to have our freedom? so next time you see someone who needs or is down on their luck, just remember, they might be a veteran of war, or they might not be a drug addict or the loser most think they are! extend your hand say hello, spare a dollar help a fellow human ! i would want someone to help me if i was david !!!
