I understand cultural differences, but these people need to have the shit kicked out of them several times!
Reedley, Calif. (KMPH News) — A valley teen is recovering after being tied up and beaten. The Fresno County District Attorney says her own father, mother and brother are responsible.
Witnesses tell Reedley Police the girl's family became enraged after finding out she was dating a boy who was not Muslim.
Investigators say the 16–year–old sent a friend a text message begging for help saying she was afraid she would die in the hands of family if police didn't get there soon.
That cry for help led Reedley Police to a home on west Lilac on June 25th.
"I responded to the residence of the victim and when the door was opened, the victim ran past the father and mother and out the door," Officer Ray Camacho said in his report.
Rebecca Cooper lives next door.
"Her face looked really, really swollen," Cooper said. "She kept it covered up most of the time."
According to the police report:
"The victim had two blackened eyes that were swollen and bruised. Her nose was swollen and bruised and she had marks and bruises on her entire body."
The girl told police her father and brother tied her up, punched and kicked her more than 30 times. Her mother did nothing to stop them.
The Fresno County DA has filed charges against 59–year–old Ahmed Taher Ahmed, his wife 52–year–old Anessa Ahmed and their son 29–year–old Wajdi Taher Ahmed.
Investigators say the witness who called 911 ... "believes the abuse is occurring because victim is Muslim and has a boyfriend that is not."
Cooper describes her next door neighbors as quiet.
"It makes me wonder what a horrific scene it was in the house and what she dealt with," Cooper said. "I understand they have their culture and religion but to me this is not acceptable."
Cooper said this is the second time in recent months police were called to the home. Reedley police won't say why. Cooper says the father's temper got worse.
"She would go down the street to visit [her boyfriend] and the father would come out and scream for her to come back and she would go back in and we would not hear or see anything," Cooper said.
According to the police report:
"The victim reported that the brother asked for knife during the attack but the mother told him he would go to jail for that and handed the spoon like object to him instead."
Officers say they found the broken spoon in the trash and blood in the bedroom closet where the victim said the attack took place.
Esther Franco is Executive Director of the Fresno Council on Child Abuse Prevention.
"Just because it's part of your custom or culture it is never ok to hurt a child," Franco said. "If you do suspect and the key word is suspect, you are to report it. It's not a person's responsibility to find out if the abuse is occurring. You leave that to the intervention professionals like Child Protective Services ."
The victim reported the attack took place the day before officers got there. The police report says the victim's mother saw the severity of the injuries but did not take her daughter to get medical care.
"The mother stated she was going to get her care but was afraid CPS would take the victim from them and think she was a bad mother."
Reedley Police says the victim is in a safe place.
All three suspects pled "not guilty" in Fresno County Superior Court. Father, mother and brother are charged with corporal injury to a child, child abuse and dissuading a witness from reporting a crime.
The victim told police her parents bribed her, offering her money and a new bedroom set if she stayed quiet.
