BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Juan Martin del Potro fought off stomach problems and vomiting before his match to defeat Ivo Karlovic on Friday and level Argentinas Davis Cup quarterfinal against Croatia at 1-1. Del Potro defeated Karlovic 6-2, 7-6 (7), 6-1. Marin Cilic gave Croatia the lead, beating David Nalbandian in a 5-hour-9 minute match that ended 5-7, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3 and put pressure on Del Potro. Doubles are set for Saturday on the outdoor, red clay court with Nalbandian and Eduardo Schwank against Cilic and Lovro Zovko. Nalbandian said he intended to play despite speculation captain Martin Jaite might replace him with Juan Monaco. Reverse singles are Sunday. "No one like to lose, but I plan to play all three matches," Nalbandian said. The 23-year-old Cilic wore down the 30-year-old Argentine, finally winning on his third match point when Nalbandian hit a ground stroke into the net to disappoint a 14,000 sellout at Parque Roca. "After playing five hours, it really matters if you win or lose," Cilic said. "I feel great mentally and I think I will come back quickly on the physical side. You could see the pressure was there because neither of us played up to our ability." Cilic said the victory would lift his teams spirits, and could hurt Argentine morale. "This will weigh on all the matches coming up," Cilic said. "The doubles will be critical. It gives us a big psychological advantage. All the rest of the matches are open now. It opens up all kinds of things and were going to be in the tie until Sunday." Nalbandian had a 4-0 record against Cilic, but they had never played on clay. Argentine captain Jaite chose him to play instead of Monaco, who has been in better form and has a higher ranking. Nalbandian broke Cilic twice in the first set -- and was broken once himself -- to win 7-5 on the red-clay court on the outskirts of the Argentine capital. Neither player managed much consistency, and in the second set it was Cilic who made fewer errors, breaking the Argentine three times to take the set 6-4. Nalbandian was steadier in the third set, breaking Cilic in the fifth game and then holding to win 6-4. He won the set with a backhand down the line, prompting loud applause from the chanting, partisan crowd. The fourth set was filled again with unforced errors, but each player managed to hold on to serve to force the tiebreaker. Nalbandian went ahead 2-1 in the tiebreaker, but lost the next six points to fall 7-2. Del Potro got through despite being ill. "Im feeling sick, I was lucky to win," he said. "Right now Im going to bed." Del Potro did away with Karlovic in just over two hours. Karlovics giant serve netted only five aces, and the Argentine came up with 10. The former U.S. Open champion won the first set in 35 minutes, but was forced to come back in the second set and win a tiebreaker. Del Potro trailed 3-6 in the tiebreaker but, with Karlovic one point from winning the set, the Argentine won three straight points to level at 6-6 and eventually won 9-7. He closed the breaker with a running forehand down the line that swept by Karlovic. Karlovic looked dispirited, making the third set was a mere formality. The South Americans have yet to win the Davis Cup and have been the losing finalist four times, including last year against Spain. Croatia won the Davis Cup in 2005. Argentina and Croatia have met twice in Davis Cup quarterfinals, and the South Americans have won both. Argentina won in 2002 in Buenos Aires, and in 2006 in Zagreb. Wholesale Jerseys China . Wladimir Balentien doubled in Adrian Beltre for Seattle in the top of the 11th, but in the bottom half Michael Young singled off Brandon Morrow (0-2), stole second, and Josh Hamilton walked. Andruw Jones flied out, but Blalock then doubled to center field, easily driving in both runners. Wholesale NBA Jerseys . Its also given a last-place team such as the Cubs an encouraging glimpse of the future. http://elevatedcolor.com/hot.html . The sides stepped away from negotiations last week with competing bids on the table and no clear road ahead. They spoke again over the weekend and agreed to devote sessions Wednesday and Thursday entirely to core economic issues -- the area where the parties seem to have the most ground to make up. ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Detroit Lions wide receiver Titus Young is still in exile. Young wasnt at practice Tuesday and his status remains very much in doubt. He was deactivated for the Lions 34-31 loss to Houston on Thanksgiving for what coach Jim Schwartz described as "unacceptable" behaviour during the previous weekends loss to Green Bay. Schwartz didnt provide any detail Tuesday on when Young might return. "Well reevaluate that as we go and again, well decide based on his behaviour getting him back with the team and getting him possibly back in a role," Schwartz said. "Its more when he gets back with the team -- if he gets back with the team -- but its more when he gets back and the behaviour that he does then." Schwartz was asked if he thinks Young has played his last game as a Lion, but the coach said that kind of talk is premature. "I think its way too soon to tell," Schwartz said. "But its definitely going to be in his court when it comes to his actions." Young, a second-year receiver out of Boise State, has 33 catches for 383 yards and four touchdowns this season. Although Youngs future is uncertain, the Lions can expect to have star defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh in the lineup when they host Indianapolis on Sunday. The NFL said Monday that Suh wouldnt be suspended after his foot caught Houston quarterback Matt Schaub in the groin area. Suh was on his chest after being taken down by an offensive lineman and extended his left foot to hit Schaub below the belt. Schaub went to his knees, doubled over in pain, but stayed in the game. The Texans went on to win in overtime. It wassnt clear from replays whether Suh meant to kick Schaub, and the defensive lineman hasnt spoken publicly about the play.dddddddddddd "I dont think it was any big news that he wasnt going to be suspended. I thought that his play was within the natural course of the game," Schwartz said. "What I saw was his head was down and away from that play. In my mind you would have to have eyes in the back of your head to be able to do it, but that games over with." The Lions (4-7) have lost three straight. They moved the ball well at times without Young last week -- rookie Ryan Broyles had six catches for 126 yards, giving Detroit another dangerous threat alongside Calvin Johnson. Matthew Stafford threw for 441 yards. Broyles said hes been in touch with Young recently but didnt want to comment further on his teammates situation. "Weve got the tools," Broyles said. "Weve got the quarterback and weve got the system to make plays, and weve just got to make one more." Schwartz, meanwhile, is still taking heat for throwing a challenge flag after a long Houston touchdown run. The play was subject to an automatic review, but because Schwartz threw his flag, he was hit with a 15-yard penalty and the review was negated -- giving the Texans a TD that replays showed shouldnt have counted. "I wish I had taken a shoe off and thrown it like that guy did to President Bush that one time," Schwartz joked. "Or if I had a hat, if I wore a hat I could have thrown that ... or thrown the headset down. I mean, Ive smashed headsets before -- that would have been a much better solution there." ' ' '
