I was watching the late news last night, and, of course, the top story was the death of new anchor Walter Cronkite. He had retired from being the regular newsman before I was old enough to remember, but is such a legend that his passing is definetely notable.
On the same news cast, they pointed out that McDonalds is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the introduction of the Happy Meal. This struck me for a couple of reasons. First of all, I myself had my 30th birthday last year September (coming up on 31 in a couple of months). That means that I don't remember a time there were not Happy Meals. I have a lot of fond memories of the fun had with Happy Meals (both the toys and the boxes they came in! LOL!), and the clips they aired with that story brought back some of those happy memories.
Then it occured to me, that I'm having fond memories of fast food meals? I'm not sure what that says about me. I guess all that's left to do is to paraphrase the words of a famous TV man. Thats just the way it is.
So I just got finished stashing some items in honor of US Independence Day.
The first item is a bit of good ol' American cheese. It's a clip from 1980s era WWF wrestling TV (Specifically a show that aired occasionally on Saturday nights on NBC, creatively called Saturday Night's Main Event). It features a music video for Hulk Hogan's wrestling theme song, called "Real American." The video is ultra cheesy. But I thought it would be "appropriate" to post it in honor of the 4th.
The second video is taken from the Boston Pops 2005 4th of July Concert, and includes the National Anthem, and the end of the 1812 Overture, complete with cannons and fireworks. :)
The final item, is a little piece called the Declaration of Independence. I thought that might be nice to post!
And as an interesting aside, I've got a distant cousin on the list of signers (Well first cousin, many generations removed). Any one else around here have a relative who signed?
Since tomorrow's Mother's Day, I decided to try to come up with a few words on what my Mom means to me. And so I won't go on for days on end about EVERYTHING she's ever done for me (which would be a HUGE list), I'll just say this:
If you've still got your Mom to talk to, go thank her for all she's done. Cuz I bet it doesn't get said enough.
If, sadly, she's no longer with you, say it anyway. Cuz I'm sure she'll still here it and appreciate it! :)
And finally, for all the mothers here on Fubar, have a great day tomorrow! You all do a hell of a job! And stop to leave me a note if you read this (either a blog comment or a PM). Cuz I think you all deserve a drink of thanks!
Happy Mother's Day!
A friend sent this to me today. I hope you all enjoy it!
When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 Beers.
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.
When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was...
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.
Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if
the jar was full.
The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.'
The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand.
The students laughed..
'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things---your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.
The sand is everything else---the small stuff. 'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life.
If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.
Spend time with your children.
Spend time with your parents.
Visit with grandparents.
Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your spouse out to dinner.
Play another 18.
There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.
Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter.
Set your priorities.
The rest is just sand.
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented.
The professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.'
The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of Beers with a friend.
