A judge has ruled that a hairstylist shouldn't be stripped of jobless benefits because of her part-time job as an exotic dancer. Mary Messner, 29, worked at Hair Mechanix in Ames from June 2006 until she was fired just after Christmas. Her boss at the salon, Diana Tegeler, testified at a recent hearing that Messner's job as a stripper made it difficult for her to stay at the salon.
"People were coming into the salon and asking where the stripper was," Tegeler said. Tegeler said inquiries from male customers upset the other stylists. "They were very embarrassed that they were even addressed in such a manner -- that they were being thought of as strippers," she said.
Tegeler said there were no conflicts with Messner's job at the salon but feared the business could eventually lose customers. "I have a reputation to uphold in the business," she said.
Messner testified that she took the stripper job to supplement her income. "It's not necessarily that I love the dancing job, but it gets the bills paid," she said. "I have a family to support, and I have two children. For their sake, I do what I have to do."
Administrative Law Judge Devon Lewis ruled there was no evidence Hair Mechanix suffered from Messner's part-time job. "Although it may be distasteful to the employer, exotic dancing is not illegal, and the dancing job did not in any ... way interfere" with Messner's salon job, Lewis ruled.
