WTF Is In Retrograde?

I don't know what's up lately but man oh man.

First my car. The Check Engine light comes on. Bring it down to the dealership. My oil was low. Now WHY the check oil light didn't come on is beyond me. Get a lecture about how I need to get my oil changed regularly. Okay, thanks, I generally do. I was a bit late on this one. If I was male would you have talked to me like I was 2? Chances are NO! Hooray, car is better. Until the other day when the damn Check Engine light comes back on. Now I'm pissed! Check the oil. Levels are good. Call for an appointment. Can't get in until Monday. Okay, not happy about that but what can ya do? Go to start my car yesterday. Yup, DOESN'T FUCKING START! Took me about 20 minutes to get it to turn over finally. So get up, call Toyota this morning. Sounds like I got bad gas to them. Okay, fine, whatever. I did get some more last night cuz I hate being below a half tank in the winter. They're busy today but if I want to bring it down, they'll try to squeeze it in. Great. Get in the car. Starts with no problem and the kicker...NO FUCKING CHECK ENGINE LIGHT! Now seriously, WTF?

Wait, I'm not quite done with my saga yet. Oh no. In addition to the drama last night with the car, my kitchen and bathroom drains decide, you know what? We're gonna back up and fill the sink with black crap. HOORAY! So here I am trying to clear these sucker for a good 45 minutes because heaven forbid mom be able to do anything. Get the running a bit. Okay. Fabu. Yeah, they're stopped up again this morning.

Now wait, I'm not done yet. This is the icing on the cake. Seriously, this is beyond belief. There's an update for my iTouch. Okay, let's do that. Now common sense would have told me NO after everything that went on, but no, uh uh, I do the update anyway. La la la. Everything's good to go. Put on some new music. Okay, now I can go to bed.

Get up this morning. After weirdness with the car, on the bus to work. Annoyingly loud people. Music time. Yeah, guess what? iTouch says I don't have anything downloaded. Oh but wait, there is more! If I look under the settings, it shows I have 317 songs. REALLY? Well where the fuck are they? Get to work, hook it up to iTunes. Yup. 2.5 GB of audio is in use along with 317 songs. Hey, look at that. The songs show up on iTunes. All 317 that are on my iTouch. Go to Music on iTouch. NADA! So now I get to go to the Apple store in an hour to deal with that.

I don't know what's going on with the stars but something is not only in retrograde but has gas and constipation too.

A small child was injured Sunday night after his mother's intoxicated boyfriend set a Christmas tree on fire in their Southwest Side apartment, officials said.

The fire was reported at about 8:20 p.m. at a residence located near 48th Street and Kolin Avenue, said Will Knight, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department. The fire was under control within 10 minutes, Knight said.

Preliminary reports said the man set the fire after an agrument then fled the scene, said Police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines.

The child was taken to Saint Anthony Hospital with minor injuries, Knight said.

As of 11:30 p.m., no one was in custody. Police were investigating.

The disturbing thing is I saw them bringing two of the fire fighters to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn this morning on my commute to work. Squad followed by ambulance, undercover cop and another squad. I knew something was up.

Two Chicago firefighters were killed Wednesday morning after they were trapped when a wall collapsed at an abandoned, one-story, brick former laundry building on East 75th Street near South Shore High School.

Four other firefighters also were trapped before being pulled to safety.

Swarms of fellow firefighters flooded the disaster scene, furiously digging through rubble to find the missing firefighters. When they were located, they were quickly carried out of the building, with firefighters clearing a path.

Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford confirmed the dead were two firefighters but said he had no information on their rank or fire company. He said 14 other firefighters were injured. Fire officials were not sure how the fire started.

One firefighter died at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and the other died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Langford said.

Fire Dept. Commissioner Robert Hoff addressed the media at the scene, his face marked with soot. He is expected to give another update and provide information on the deceased firefighters at Christ Medical Center.

Langford said all of the surviving firefighters were “stable,” without life-threatening injuries.

Nearly 100 firefighters responded to the “Mayday” call, including off-duty firefighters and Hoff, a third-generation Chicago firefighter whose father died years ago in the line of duty.

“They were removed from different corners of the building,” Hoff said of those who had to be pulled out.

Of the rescue efforts, Hoff said, “They worked hard, got them out fast.”

The fire Wednesday came on the 100th anniversary of the Union Stock Yards fire, which killed 21 Chicago firefighters.

Frozen hydrants might have hampered firefighting efforts Wednesday.

The three-alarm fire started just before 7 a.m. in the building — the former Sing Way Laundry —at 1744 E. 75th St.

Other firefighters, beyond the four who initially were trapped, also were taken to hospitals.

Robert Smart, who owns Smart Bros Car Wash next door to the laundry, said squatters regularly slept in the abandoned laundry building. He said he’s called police about the squatters before and that each time a security fence at the rear of the property was repaired, but the squatters cut a new whole in it and returned.

I'm Not a Sir!

I've accepted the fact that I'm not all that and a bag of chips when it comes to looks. That's not to say that I'm fugly by any means, but I know I'm not super model material and I never will be. I have short hair and I like it. I had it long for the vast majority of my life and it just got to be too much. Sure I can afford to miss a meal or two, but realistically, who can't? Basically, I'm average. That's just how my DNA stacked up. Not much I can really do about it, but I'm seriously getting sick and tired of people calling me SIR because I have fucking short hair.

Tonight is yet another prime example. At the grocery store with mom. No bagger so I start putting my stuff in the bags because I don't want to be there all night. This bleach blonde thing with black roots showing and enough makeup on to make Tammy Faye gasp, goes to stock the paper bags saying, "Excuse me sir."

"Yeah, not a sir, but thanks."

She bursts out laughing, "Oh, I'm so sorry." Rolling my eyes over to her, I responded, "I'm glad you find that utterly hysterical."

The cashier looks like she wants to crawl under her register, I continue bagging my stuff. One would think blondie would have enough sense to just stay the hell away from me. NOPE! She comes up to me and says, "I hope I didn't offend you, but I didn't look at your face."

Okay, so seriously, WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT SUPPOSE TO MEAN!? I didn't realize my Nike walking shoes were so freakin' manly!

By now I'm about ready to clock the bitch. For anyone that knows me, when I'm royally pissed, I get this lil' smile that can seriously scare the piss out of you. With smile in hand, I reply, "Well, it's a little too late to not be offensive now, isn't it? I strongly suggest you pay attention so you don't come off so rude and ignorant. One would think your mama would have raised you better than that, but I guess she didn't."

(Dec. 1) -- Plenty of people keep cash in their billfolds. But police in Oklahoma say two women tried to steal $2,600 worth of valuables under their skin folds.

Cops in Edmond arrested Ailene Brown, 28, and Shmeco Thomas, 37, on suspicion of shoplifting after the pair allegedly stuffed $2,600 worth of footwear, denim and accessories under rolls of fat on their stomachs and beneath their breasts.

"These two individuals were actually concealing them in areas of their body where excess skin was, underneath their chest area and up around their armpits," Officer James Hamm told KFOR.com.

The suspects allegedly attempted to use their bodies to stash four pairs of boots, three pairs of jeans, as well as gloves and a wallet, according to NYDailyNews.com.

Investigators say Brown was carrying a knife in her purse so she could cut the tags off stolen goods.

The suspects allegedly managed to hide the goods, but apparently their plan wasn't fleshed out. They were arrested before they could make it out of the T.J. Maxx store and hit with felony shoplifting charges.

To me this would be common sense but obviously it's not for a lot of people. This was an actual email forwarded to me from a co-worker.

Dear Round Rock ISD Parents and Guardians,

As many of you know we had a situation earlier this week which required us to evacuate two of our campuses due to a bomb threat. This morning we have learned new information from the Williamson County Sheriff's Office which we feel benefit all of our parents and students.

Authorities have identified a suspect in Tuesday's bomb threat and he does not live in the Austin area. The suspect was found in Saudi Arabia and the FBI will continue the investigation since there is an international component. The Sheriff's Office assures us that there is no threat to Round Rock ISD schools.

What is disturbing about this situation is it may have been avoided if proper Internet safety had been followed. The Saudi Arabia suspect became Facebook "friends" with several of our students and from there had access to all of their Facebook "friends." Another disturbing component is the fact that our students have placed personal information on their Facebook accounts. Students' e-mail addresses, phone numbers and personal pictures were available for the suspect. The suspect was able to threaten many of our students via Facebook and by calling their cell phones.

It is vital that our students understand the importance of being safe on the Internet. We need help from our parents to be vigilant in monitoring their child's social networking accounts and general Internet use while at home. For their safety, students should not place any personal information on the Internet and they should not accept "friends" online who they do not know. At school we teach our students Internet safety and we have systems in place that block social networking sites such as Facebook on all school computers. Here are additional safety tips that can help keep your child safe:

Never give out any personal information to anyone on the Internet (including name, address, phone, age, friend's names, school location, etc.)

Never arrange a face-to-face meeting with anyone you have met on the Internet.

Parents should search and monitor their child's social networking accounts. Make sure your child's online "friends" are people they actually know.

Always maintain access to your child's online account and randomly check his/her e-mail. Be upfront with them about your access and the reasons why.

Make sure you understand how your children are using the computer, what Web sites they are visiting, and who they are communicating with online.

Never upload (post) pictures of yourself, or your friends/family, on the Internet or send to anyone you do not know personally.

Periodically check your child's cell phone use and text messages to see who your child is communicating with.

For additional safety tips visit www.onguardonline.gov

Please use this opportunity to speak with your child about Internet safety and we too will be revisiting these tips with our students during the school day. Thank you for your support of Round Rock ISD schools and by working together we can keep our students and schools safe.

Sincerely,
Jesús H. Chávez, Ph.D.
Round Rock ISD Superintendent
