STEM CELL RESEARCH!!
State representatives in Des Moines spent hours hearing debate over the controversial stem cell research bill Wednesday. It would allow medical researchers to create embryonic stem cells through cloning.
A similar version sailed through the Senate last week and Gov. Chet Culver made it very clear he supports this legislation. But after Wednesday night's hearing, whether the bill will make it to the governor's desk is anyone's guess.
Medical researchers in Iowa are already using stem cells. The controversy is centered around the state's ban on human cloning for any purpose -- reproductive and therapeutic.
*** Opinion:
Stem Cell research is a slippery slope. Ethical problems could arise such as women selling their eggs for the profit. This cloning arguement is not helping matters much. On the otherside, it seems a waste to not harvest something productive from a fertility clinc embryo that will be dispose of anyway.
So - should therapeutic cloning be allowed for the sake of stem cell research? |
