All of life's journeys begin with the phrase, "I want." Think about your career and the times when you said "I want." Maybe you said "I want" go to college-and then enrolled in school and completed your degree. Maybe you said "I want" to work for a large or a small company-and you are working there now. Maybe you said "I want" to lead teams-and that's one of your current responsibilities. "I want" is a very powerful phrase. Without it, it's hard to go very far. Imagine going on a trip without selecting a destination beforehand. What would you pack? How would you get there? Where would you stay? Your trip probably would not end up being much fun. It's the same with your career. Not being able to visualize your desired result leads to results not happening. Goals are reached when you decide what you want, and then take action to get it. Without an end in mind, you will wander aimlessly; and as long as you are aimless, you will be wasting time. You will feel lost. You will be like a stray leaf, going wherever the wind takes you. What's a Vision? My definition of a vision is a visualization or a picture of where you see yourself in the future. Your picture can be one of where you want to be in a day, a week, a month, a year, or even farther into the future. The visualization of your goal is what compels you to move forward. A vision is a snapshot of what you want your career and life to look like in the future. This snapshot gives your journey a clear and reachable destination and provides focus. All goals are reached in the mind first. You see yourself both achieving that goal and experiencing the satisfaction it will bring you once you are there. This picture is what will help you to persevere during times of doubt. Your picture of success will give you purpose, power, and excitement. Your picture will give you a reason to get out of bed every day. How do you create a Vision? Close your eyes. Let your imagination take over. Get in touch with what you really want and what is important to you. Ask yourself meaningful questions. Let the answers come to you. What Questions will help get you to a Vision quickly? Here are some questions you can ask yourself: If it was possible, what would be different in my career? What type of job would I have? What would I be responsible for? What type of boss/co-workers/team would I have? What kind of hours would I work? What type of company would I work for? What sort of culture would the company have? What city would I live in? How much money would I make? How would I handle stress, my workload, and deadlines? Once you have thought about these questions, it is time to get your answers down on paper. There are no right or wrong answers to these questions. The answers are what is true for you-not what someone else wants for you, but what is truly in your heart. Listen to yourself, and your answers will be the perfect ones for you. Once you have your vision, then it's time to make it real. So, what do you say? You only have one life to live, so it might as well be a life you love!

Why do people leave their bosses and not Jobs?

You may have heard this statement many a times but have you thought that it really is a major reason of people leaving organization after growth prospects and monetary reasons.

I remember a Boss who kept me interested and focused, company can create systems, but it’s the bosses that helps people fit and function within the various processes. A mismatch of the values ultimately sends people towards the door. The boss should have solid values that are in alignment with that of the organizations.

Why do people leave their bosses is a must asked question, are they not happy with them, if not, then what are the symptoms of these scary bosses, let us find out here through this article:

When the boss Under-communicates. It sounds crazy because so many leaders are always talking, but I’m referring to formal communication from the upper levels of the organization to the lower. Leaders need to ensure that employees throughout the organization know what is going on.

Sometimes, that’s not easy. I know of a top-level executive team that spends an extraordinary amount of time meeting and strategizing about direction for the organization, but they neglect to inform the lower levels of management about new developments and initiatives. They’re always surprised at how uninformed everyone below them is (“Why can’t people get with the program?” Because you never told them!:( ).

Neglects Human Resource Issues. Too often, top-level leaders leave human resource issues to the HR department. But employee morale, evaluation of performance, identification of high potentials, should be leadership issues. Effective leaders are in touch with what their followers think, know, and do. Leadership and HR should be inextricably interlinked.

One important point (and it is the most frequent complaint I hear from employees), is the treatment and use of “human resources.” Leaders must treat employees humanely. Bullying, punishing and even neglect is the expressway to leadership failure.

Lacks Vision (or Shared Purpose). Leaders need to have a clear vision of where an organization is headed, and create a sense of shared purpose among all organizational members. Importantly, leaders need to constantly communicate the vision and shared purpose to everyone.

Fails to create culture of mutual respect. A core value of every organization should be one of mutual respect and civility. Of course, this is easier said than done, but a starting point is to simply promote this value. Company leaders play a critical part in creating an atmosphere of respect and stopping instances of employee-to-employee and even the higher levels

Lacks Transparency. From the employees’ perspective, bad bosses are inconsistent, unpredictable, and perceived as having “double standards.” Effective leaders are transparent. They don’t play games. They are straight and fair in their dealings with others, and they certainly wouldn’t ask employees to do something they wouldn’t do themselves.

Unwillingness to Change and Innovate. They don’t change and they don’t let their team members to initiate new and creative ideas. Far too many leaders and organizations have failed and disappeared because of an inability to adapt and innovate. “It’s my way or the highway” is the road to failure.

In order to be creative and adaptive, leaders need to ask the hard questions: “What are we doing wrong?” “How can we get better?” Leaders need to be open to different viewpoints and criticism from their followers. Continuous and critical self-evaluation is necessary for leaders and organizations to grow and innovate.

Bosses should be the captains of organizational team. They should be great motivators, innovators, and leaders, who inspire the team members they supervise to achieve great things. These managers understand how to treat employees fairly and with respect, and more importantly understand why it is important to do so. Managers who do this in turn breed new leaders for the organization who will follow the example set forth by their predecessors

22 Steps to Become a Successful Entrepreneur

Introduction

Having been motivated to become entrepreneur, the next natural question one
may now naturally ask is what next. The potential entrepreneurs would become
entrepreneurs only when he or she owns an enterprise. One who does not own
an enterprise can not be termed as an entrepreneur. The business to be set up
can be a manufacturing venture, a trading firm or service establishment. The
manufacturing firm will encompass even those steps that will be necessary for
setting up a trading firm or a service venture.
The various steps involved in setting up a business enterprise will be most
complex when it relates to an industrial enterprise.
The steps in setting up a
Small enterprise are:
1. Deciding to go into business
This is the most crucial decision a prospective entrepreneur has to take. The
person should decide whether to take salary based employment or opting for
self employment/entrepreneurship
2. Analysing strengths/Weaknesses
Having decided to become an entrepreneur, one has to analyze his/her
strengths/weaknesses. This will enable him/her to know what type of and
size of business would be most suitable. This will vary from person to person
3. Training
Quite possibly the above analysis may reveal glaring deficiencies which are
required to be made up through training. Such training could be:
I. Developing skills and change attitudes-
Entrepreneurship and Business Management Training skills
II. Developing Technical /work skills for proposed product/project
4. Environmental scanning
It is essential to study the environment in which you shall operate to ensure
enterprise success. Get to know the business opportunities and threats in
the environment. This will assist proper project identification and selection.
5. Product Selection
The next step is deciding what business to venture into. The range of
products shall be taken up for manufacture and in what quantity. The level
of activity will help in deciding size of business and form of ownership .One
could generate number of project ideas through environmental scanning,
Short list a few items, closely examine each of them and zero in to a final
product(s).
6. Market Survey
It is easy to manufacture an item but difficult to sell. So it is prudent to
survey the market before embarking upon production and ensure the
product chosen is in sufficient demand
Ascertain changes in product design required; determine demand supply lag,
extent of competition, potential share of the market, possible pricing and
distribution policy etc. The principle is to produce what people demand in a
form and quantity that can be easily sold.
7. Form of Ownership
A firm can be constituted as sole proprietorship, partnership; limited
company (Public/Private) cooperative society etc. This will depend upon the
type, purpose and size of your business. One may also decide on the form of
ownership based on resources on hand.
8. Location
The next step will be to decide on the place where the business is to be
located. Will it be hired or owned, the size of plot covered and open area and
the suitability of site will have to be decided The enterprise can be located
based on the availability of skills, resources, market etc
9. Technology
To manufacture a product requires various processes. The information on
various types of technology should be collected. This will be very useful in
determining the type of machinery and equipment to be used.
10. Machinery and Equipment
Having chosen the technology, the machinery and equipment required for
manufacturing has to be decided, suppliers identified and their cost
estimated
11. Business Registration
Having known various opportunities, the prospective entrepreneur will have
to register his/her business entity by way of filing a memorandum in
duplicate with the designated office for this purpose.
12. Project/Business Report
After deciding on the form of ownership, location, technology for
manufacturing, machinery and equipment one is ready to prepare a
feasibility report or ones’s project report. The economic and technical
viability of the project has to be selected as to be established through
project report. This will be useful to obtain financial support from financial
institutions/Banks.
13. Finance
An entrepreneur has to follow specified procedures to obtain finance from
Financial Institutions/Banks.
14. Technical Know how
In quite few cases technical know how of the envisaged project/business
may be required or arranged. This can be arranged through Technology
supporting institutions and private consultants
15. Power Connection
The site chosen should have adequate power connection. One can calculate
the total power requirement, voltage, [phase- single or three], determine
the nearest pole from which power will be given to you as it can materially
determine installation cost
16. Installation of Machinery
Having arranged for finance, work-shed, power etc., the next step is to
procure the machinery and begin its installation. This should be preferably as
per plant layout.
17. Recruitment of Manpower
Once machines are installed manpower will be required to run them. So the
quantum and type (skilled, semi skilled, unskilled, administrative) of the
labour has to be determined, source of getting desired labour has to be
identified and recruited.
18. Raw materials
The labour requires raw materials to work upon the installed machines. The
raw material required maybe available locally or outside. Systematic
arrangement must be done to ensure constant supply of raw materials to the
enterprise.
19. Production
There should be not any wastage of manpower, materials or machine
capacity installed.
Production of the proposed items should be taken up in two stages:
a) Trial Production
b) Commercial Production
Trial Production will help tackling of problems confronted in production and
test marketing of products. This will reduce the chances of losses in the
eventuality of mistakes in project/business conception. Commercial
production should start after successful trial production.
20. Marketing
Having produced the products/services, the stage comes to sell it. The
entrepreneur should consider various aspects on how to reach customers,
distribution channels/commission structure, pricing advertising/publicity etc
21. Marketing Research
Once the products/ have reached the market, the periodic market research
should continuously be done to collect information from customers using the
products, this may cause the firm to change the design, taste and make
necessary diversification that appeal customer’s need and demand.
22. Monitoring
The prospective entrepreneur should make a periodic monitoring of all
components of the business to ensure the growth and take immediate
measures in case of any dwindling in sales, profitability for taking possible
corrective measures
Education and Employment Opportunities in Geology

Geology (Geo means earth and logos means science) is the science of study of earth. It is an interdisciplinary science related to physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics. There are many branches of geology such as physical geology-study of work of natural processes which bring changes upon the earth's surface; petrology-study of different kinds of rocks; mineralogy-study of different kinds of minerals; palaeontology-study of fossils; geomorphology-study of morphology of earth's surface; stratigraphy or historical geology- study of rock in relation to their deposition and age; structural geology-study of structures of rocks; volcanology-study of volcanoes; environmental geology-study of environment in relation to living and non-living, hydrogeology-study of water bearing capacity of rocks; economic geology-study of mineral deposits and fossil fuels; seismology-study of earthquakes; engineering geology- study of applications of geology to civil engineering works; mining geology-study of applications of geology to mining engineering; geophysics-applications of physics in geological study; rock mechanics- study of rocks under different civil engineering properties; geochemistry-study of different kinds of elements and their compounds in the earth.

Education in Geology

There are number of universities and institutes offering bachelor, master and doctorate degree in geology. For admission to B.Sc. general or honour's, 10+2 with science either in non-medical or medical subjects with at least 50% marks. For master degree, a bachelor degree with geology as one of the subject is required with minimum 50% marks and for Ph.D. there is requirement of at least 55% marks in master degree. However, the rules for admission to bachelor, masters and research degree vary from university to university/institutes.

Higher Education

There are number of universities in the country offering doctorate degree in geology as given in the list. Post-doctoral fellowships are also available for high quality research work. In the country, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) conducts national level examination for fellowships and lectureship in earth, atmospheric, ocean and meteorological sciences. In this examination, master's degree with 55% marks candidate can appear. After passing out this examination for JRF, one can join for Ph.D. in any university or institutes and get fellowship of Rs.12000+HRA per month and contingency initially up to three years which can be extended up to five years depending on the work performance. The Ph.D. degree candidates can apply to CSIR for research associateship on a suitable research topic and can get fellowship of Rs.18000/- to 20,000/- per month for one year which can further extend to next one year. Institutes like IITs also offers post doctorate fellowships. In foreign countries, universities/institutes offer doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships especially for students of developing countries.

4.0 Job Opportunities

There are good job opportunities in the subject in the fields like teaching, research and organizational work. The entry level post in the teaching is the post of Assistant Professor/Lecturer which requires master degree in geology with 55% marks and NET/SLET/PhD. National level organizations like National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad; National Antarctica Research Centre, Goa; National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Hyderabad; Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad; Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Dehradun; Central Ground Water Board; Geological Survey of India; National Mineral Development Corporation; Indian Bureau of Mines; Atomic Mineral Development Corporation; Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd; Uranium Corporation of India, Ltd.
